Harold Hill is a salesman who comes to the town of River City, Iowa and cons the citizens into buying insturments and uniforms for a boys band he promises to organize, despite the fact he doesn't know a trombone from a treble cleff. Harold's plan is to flee as soon as he receives the money and go onto the next town and con more people. Marian Paroo, the town librarian, suspect Harold Hill as being a fraud, but her little brother, Winthrop is so excited about the band she keeps her mouth shut. As Harold realizes Marian suspects him of being a fraud, he tries to pretend to be in love with her so she won't rat him out, but when real feelings get in the way, Harold begins to get mixed feelings about leaving River City, Iowa.
